Leadership in Review.
Well, we’ve made it. Another year nears completion, and what a year it has been for leaders. As we close out this year, I wanted to take a beat, look back on the patterns we saw, and think about what they mean going into next year.
As I was looking back over the insights we’ve shared this year, and the work we’ve done alongside leadership teams, three things kept coming up again and again:
1) Bold ideas without structure don’t land.
Every company we worked with this year had ambitions; New markets, new products, new ways of working, new technologies. But the ideas that struggled to get traction weren’t the wrong ones; they struggled because the organisation underneath them wasn’t ready to carry them.
Decision-making was unclear. Priorities were competing. Managers were stretched too thin. Strategy, without structure, simply collapsed under pressure.
2) Performance is a system, not a sprint.
High performance is not a sprint you turn on when things get urgent. It’s a system that’s lived every day. The teams that made progress weren’t the ones pushing hardest in Q4. They were the ones who had rhythm; clear expectations, regular feedback conversations, and leaders who held the line even when things got uncomfortable.
When performance becomes episodic, everything feels frantic. When it’s systemic, momentum builds quietly and sustainably.
3) Clarity beats chaos.
The fastest-moving teams we’ve worked with this year weren’t doing more. They were doing less, but better. They made decisions earlier, they prioritised more ruthlessly. They held on to the vision of where they wanted to go and moved towards it every day. They were willing to say no, to pause, to simplify. In contrast, the teams that felt stuck were often drowning in options, initiatives, and good intentions — without a clear path through.
So what does that mean for next year?
It means moving away from doing more, and committing to doing better. It means investing in the foundations that make ambition executable. It means leaning into difficult conversations instead of avoiding them, and putting real mechanisms in place foraccountability and course correction.
And perhaps most importantly, it means shifting our focus from leadership at the top, to leadership everywhere, especially in the middle, where most change actually lives or dies.
If there’s one thing this year reinforced for me, it’s that strong leadership isn’t loud or heroic. It’s structured, consistent, and shared. That’s the work ahead. And it’s worth doing properly.

Top Tip + Tool
A tool to help you lead with intention
The end of the year often feels like a sprint. You’re trying to land projects, wrap reviews, set budgets, and somewhere in all of that, you start to notice patterns: ways of working that aren’t quite working, or tensions in your team that keep showing up.
But knowing something must change is one thing; figuring out how to do it is another.
That’s where the OTL Leadership Wheel comes in. It’s a simple tool we use with clients to pause and ask:
What does my team need from me right now? What does the business need? And how might my leadership style need to evolve to meet those needs?
Whether it’s having more direct conversations, creating more clarity, or empowering others instead of jumping in; the Leadership Wheel helps you map what you’re doing now, what needs to shift, and what small, practical actions you can take to start closing that gap.
We’re gifting it to you as a way to reflect. Use it to get honest about what’s needed, and come into the next year clear, grounded, and ready to lead with purpose.
Top Tip
Don’t just resolve — realign.
Every January, leaders set bold resolutions. But what often gets missed is the realignment that makes those ambitions stick.
Before you stack more goals on your to-do list, pause and ask:
What does my team need from me right now?
Because the best leaders we’ve worked with this year didn’t do more, they did better.
They aligned their style to the strategy, their energy to what mattered, and ensured that their teams shared their priorities and were equipped to tackle them.
So before you write a new plan, check:
Are you the leader your strategy needs right now?
