Q4 - The last mile.
Every company we are working with right now is doing the same thing: bracing for the final sprint. You can feel the sense of urgency, and almost panic, as we watch the cliff edge of the year inch closer.
I get it, I feel it myself. With only 10 weeks remaining, we find ourselves with so much left to do. Q4 has a way of turning everything into a race; to land the plan, fix the gaps, keep the wheels turning. But in that last mile, we often stop leading and start reacting.
As managers get overwhelmed, rituals fall away. 1.1s get skipped, communication gets tactical, and priorities blur. And the people holding it all together? They’re often the ones most at risk of burnout or disengagement.
So here’s your reminder: the way you finish the year matters just as much as how you start it.
Now is the moment to reset focus, clarify priorities, and reinforce leadership habits that protect momentum, not just output. That’s how we close strong — not just with results, but with people who still have fuel in the tank for what’s next.

Signals + Shifts
The last mile of the year doesn’t have to be a panic sprint.
September hits and suddenly everyone’s rushing to squeeze in goals, wrap up projects, and “land the year strong.” But in this final stretch, the things that hold teams together; 1:1s, check-ins, coordination of priorities, etc, start falling to the wayside, etc, start falling to the wayside, and the year ends in a chaotic scramble.
We see it every Q4; folks are stressed, stuck in budget and planning meetings, team offsites and holiday parties. We try sprinting hard, but barely get to crawl over crossing the finish line.
Let’s stop the cycle.
Now is the moment to reset the rhythm and get real. Align your teams and make deliverables realistic but still stretchy. Map out the next 10 weeks in a series of focused 2-week sprints. Rally the business around a few sharp priorities. Hold managers accountable for seeing things through, ensuring that their teams stay focused on what really matters, right to the end.
Because strong finishes don’t happen by accident. They’re built on clarity, consistency, and shared ownership.
Make the last mile a testament to teamwork instead of a test to see who burns out.
In Practice
Q4 Is Not the Time to Wing It.
We recently worked with the exec team of a high-growth company who’d hit that familiar September inflection point:
* Big goals still outstanding
* Teams spread thin
* Managers overwhelmed
* And a quiet anxiety building about how the year might end.
The strategy was sound, the ambition was palpable, but the execution focus was starting to fray. We knew instinctively that they didn’t need another offsite, strategy session or motivational talk.
They needed a reset: one that helped leaders get clear on what must ship, refocus the team on a shared finish line, and turn all that urgency into a workable rhythm.
So that’s what we did.
Together, we built a Q4 Execution Sprint; six weeks of focused support across the leadership layer. It included:
* Asharp refocus on Q4 deliverables, with fast-tracked permissions to put non-priority items on pause
*Manager enablement sessions to reset 1:1s, feedback rhythms, and team energy.
*Cross-functional alignment to surface bottlenecks and clear the runway.
*Aleadership scorecard to hold the C-suite group accountable for maintaining focus and getting things done.
The result? Less noise. More pace. And an org-wide sense that the end of the year didn’t have to be chaotic; it could be coordinated.
We’re sharing this because we’re seeing the same pattern everywhere: teams that know what good looks like, but aren’t doing it consistently. The ones who take time now to reset that rhythm? They’ll finish the year strong and start the next one from a place of momentum, not burnout. 💪

Top Tip
Don’t take your top performers for granted.
You know the saying; “The squeaky wheel gets the grease"?
Do you find that your highest performers (the people who always deliver, who stay steady in the chaos, who never need chasing) tend to get the least amount of your time?
Pause to reflect.
Just because they’re not showing cracks doesn’t mean they aren’t under strain—or that they wouldn’t benefit from a bit of recognition. Job satisfaction is key to retention, and I've seen too many superstars leave their organisations (to the shock and horror of their bosses) because of pressures they had quietly endured.
This week, take five minutes to acknowledge their efforts, listen to them intently in your 1:1 (don’t use it to vent). Check in to make sure they're holding up as well as they seem. Let them know their value (be specific not just “great job”) and what you have planned for them.
