We created THE Scale-Up PROGRAMME because we believe exceptional management is the key to successfully scaling a sustainable business and retaining talent.

First mover advantage doesn’t go to the first company that launches, it goes to the first company that scales.

WHAT GOT YOU HERE WON'T GET YOU THERE

The investment is secured, customers love your product, and the team is growing... fast! But now you need the capability to hit the next level: growing up, becoming profitable and staying sustainable - while still being true to the culture you’ve created.

Startup founders rightly want to reward loyal people who’ve been with them since the early days because they’ve seen their hustle and grit in action, and they want those people to show the way to newbies. However, it’s often at this stage in growth that gaps in knowledge show up, and different skillsets are needed.

As a manager, you have a crucial role in the growth of your company. You’ve proven your can-do attitude in the past, so it is easy to be expected to ‘just do it’ and reflect later. This approach can work for a while, but has cumulative issues down the line. Your people’s trust is a precious thing, and hard to win back when lost.

Take action for your development now - get support, and gain necessary knowledge and skills. Enable your team to be the best they can be at delivering the next stage of the vision.

TACKLE YOUR GROWING PAINS

We exist to grow management and leadership capability for Europe’s scale-ups and fast-changing businesses. In 2014, an independent review into scale-ups* showed that after hiring talent, the biggest problem that stops scale-ups from achieving their potential is leadership capability. If your organisation is changing rapidly, then you’re probably feeling some ‘growing pains’. As a manager you will likely to be going through this on a more individual level, through a lot of learning on the job.

Our culture experts and leadership coaches are here to help you through this challenging career stage. The ScaleUp Management Programme is delivered completely online. It will take you through all the essentials you’ll need to manage large teams and convert the power of people into successful products and experiences for your customers.

After hiring talent, the second most important factor stopping scale-ups from growing their revenues faster is lack of capacity and experience in the leadership team.

ScaleUp is a 6-week intensive programme for new managers

Move fast and learn things

We know time isn't something you have a lot of during the scale-up stage, so there is flexibility built in. This is a brand new style of management programme; designed to be contextual and tailored to new scale-up managers and delivered completely online. This means you can practically apply what you’re learning right away, and decide what works best in your own organisation. You’ll gain and share knowledge, make connections, practice new skills, and discover the mindset to grow into the manager you want to be.

The course takes a blended learning approach, drawing on our experience and network. We believe the best learning happens when it is contextual and relevant to the problems you need to solve right now, and when you can hear other people’s perspectives. There is time built in for reflection, practice and discussion.

HOW IT WORKS

  • 5 x Deep Dives:

Each week you'll be emailed a pre-thinking pack on one of five essential topics, containing inspiring case studies, thought-provoking content and reflection questions. The modules are;

  1. Managing (constant) Change
  2. Your Management Style
  3. Growing Your Team
  4. High Impact Teams
  5. Managing for Performance.

Scroll down for more detail on what is covered each week.

  • 5 x Practical Actions:

Self-led assignments that can be practically applied in your organisation so you feel the benefit right away.

  • 6 x Group Calls:

Discuss the deep dive topic of the week, swap notes and dig into the knotty issues on a group Zoom call.

  • 1 x Leadership Coaching Session:

Personalised growth support from a Scale-Up Coach in a one-to-one Zoom call. Additional coaching sessions can be added on.

  • Ongoing Community Access:

One of the biggest advantages of this program is the learning shared from other managers going through similar challenges and opportunities. We take pride in our community and ensure they continue to learn from each other by giving them access to our invite only group. Each participant is automatically enrolled and gets access to exclusive events, content and experts.

Exclusive original content

Gillian Davis is the author of First Time Leader: Foundational Tools to Inspire and Enable Your Team (Wiley, 2014), and has supported hundreds of aspiring leaders to reach their goals.

In this programme, Gillian is bringing together original content she’s created while working with her scale-up clients such as ustwo, MessageBird and WeTransfer.

Alongside this, you’ll find Gillian’s curated articles, videos, and podcasts featuring professionals from her network and beyond.

What to expect

Each person’s experience on the programme is different because you will be bringing your own background and context. We will never encourage you to take flimsy hacks or dodgy shortcuts, or to 'carbon copy' other companies’ processes.

In our experience, we have found that participants’ learning (and the benefit to the organisation) is more impactful when they have a chance to take on new knowledge, then try things out and reflect - over time.

We want you to commit to push yourself and your thinking, and also support and challenge the other participants. If you’re not sure if the programme is right for you, drop us a line and we’ll be happy to answer your questions and help you figure it out.

Is it right for you?

  • Have hiring responsibility or are about to make hire(s) for first time
  • Are a manager responsible for the performance of a team or product
  • Have been quickly promoted but are experiencing some gaps in knowledge

Don’t put it off and learn the hard way. If you need support to convince your boss and are not sure how to frame it - we can help.  Apply to join the ScaleUp programme - level up fast and increase your impact.

This programme is designed for first time managers. Many scale-ups are technology product companies but if you’re from a fast-growing or rapidly-changing organisation from another sector, we’d love for you to join us. If you’re not sure, please get in touch and we can discuss your options.

Don't hesitate to email your questions to scaleup@overtimeleader.com

The facilitators have been fantastic. The Zoom calls were more interactive than I expected - more discursive rather than simply lecturing. Being able to question and interact throughout has meant more content absorbed!

WHAT's THE Time Commitment?

This programme is completely online, so you can do it from anywhere and fit it around your life and work. It's perfect for remote workers too.

In total, it’s a commitment of 2.5 to 4 hours a week over six weeks. Here's how it breaks down:

  • Self study - around 90 minutes to two hours a week

We recommend you set aside dedicated time for self-study to get the best outcome from this programme. This is around 90 minutes to two hours a week.

  • Group calls - from 60 to 90 minutes each week

There are six calls with your cohort over the programme. We’ll fix the times for these at the start of your course.

  • Practical Action assignments - will fall in the remit of your day job

These shouldn’t take up much additional time, although make sure you have some time to reflect on it before each call. There are no essays to submit! It’s about putting the week’s learning into practice, and reflecting on how it goes. We recommend making time to discuss the takeaways you are gaining from the programme with others in your organisation, and reflect with your line manager on your progress.

  • Coaching call - one hour

Each participant will have a 1:1 coaching call during the programme. In addition, you can choose to add more one-to-one sessions from one of OverTime's ScaleUp coaches**

Week by WeeK - Deep Dives

The learning design of the programme means week on week you’ll build on knowledge and complexity while tackling one of the five essential management topics. Here's a bit more detail about what we'll cover.

  • ONE: Managing Change - Business as Usual

We kick off by zooming out to look at change. How it affects the organisation, ourselves as managers and our teams.

  • TWO: Your Management Style - You Do You

In week two we dig into how we show up as managers, work on defining your personal management style and working with feedback.

  • THREE: Growing Your Team - Hiring Like A Boss

The third module looks at scaling your team, sharing hiring techniques we’ve tried and tested and some common pitfalls to avoid.

  • FOUR: High Impact Teams - Build an A-Team

In the fourth week, we apply a lot of our learning so far to the team context. Looking at dynamics and communication we’ll discuss ways to tackle common issues that can occur when you’re growing quickly.

  • FIVE: Managing for Performance - Push it further

This module focuses on enabling your team to be as effective and efficient as possible during this high-stakes time for your business. We will discuss the challenging topic of when to let someone go - and performance management in general.

*If your company has grown its turnover or team by more than 20% per year over the past three years, then it is officially deemed a “scale-up”. We don't really care too much about definitions though, so if you are a first-time manager working in an organisation going through growth or change we'd be happy to have you join us! You don't have to be a technology or product organisation, but a lot of our content will reference these types of companies and ways of working.

**Add-on ScaleUp Coaching sessions are at an additional (discounted) price, depending on availability
